Cachin vs Ramos Vinolas Prediction

We have an intriguing final in Gstaad between first-time finalist Pedro Cachin and four-time ATP Tour titlist Albert Ramos Vinolas. Whichever way you look at it, not many people fancied this matchup. Ramos Vinolas’ form in the months leading to Gstaad has been rather appalling with just six Tour-level wins all season. He started the week with his lowest ATP ranking in four years (79th).

But the turnaround has been magnificent. He’s beaten quite an impressive lineup, such as Fabio Fognini, Lorenzo Sonego, and Juan Pablo Varillas – all in three sets. His 6-2, 6-3 win over Miomir Kecmanovic was his first straight-sets win of the week.

Pedro Cachin, for his part, was contesting his first ATP semifinal on Saturday, and he did not look perturbed one bit as he thumped Serbian youngster Hamad Medjedovic 6-3, 6-1. Cachin dropped just two points behind his first serve-all match as he raced to victory in 65 minutes.

It should be an engaging final as both Cachin and Ramos Vinolas like to dictate rallies with their heavy ground strokes. At 28 and with a seven-year age gap, Cachin is the younger player in this matchup and will have the extra yard of pace to run across the baseline. His serve has held up nicely this week even under a barrage of pressure.

Ramos Vinolas, however, can count on his experience having played at the highest stage, including a Masters 1000 final. The Spaniard definitely enjoys the conditions at altitude as his forehand zips through the court at lightning speed. Still, we cannot ignore the fact that Cachin has not dropped a set and has played some of his best tennis this week. If he overcomes a nervous start (as is the case with first-time finalists), we can see the Argentine hoisting his first ATP title.
